SEER2 Explained: What Florida Homeowners Actually Need

SEER2 Explained: What Florida Homeowners Actually Need

Shopping for a mini split, you'll see SEER2 ratings plastered everywhere — 18, 20, 22, even 30+. SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how much cooling you get per unit of electricity over a season. Higher = more efficient. But the highest number isn't automatically the smartest buy.

Why SEER2 matters more in Florida

With cooling demand nearly year-round and some of the higher electric rates in the country, your AC runs far more hours here than in most states. That means efficiency differences compound fast — a more efficient system can pay for the upgrade through lower bills.

The sweet spot for most homes

  • 18–20 SEER2: Solid efficiency, great value for most South Florida homes.
  • 20–25 SEER2: Noticeably lower bills; ideal if you cool aggressively or have high usage.
  • 25+ SEER2: Premium efficiency — worth it for large multi-zone homes or energy-conscious buyers, but the payback period stretches.

Don't forget dehumidification

In Florida, comfort is about moisture as much as temperature. A right-sized, properly-tuned system removes humidity better than an oversized one. A huge, ultra-high-SEER2 unit that's too big for the room will short-cycle, leaving you cold but clammy.

Our honest take

We help you pick the efficiency that actually pays off for your home and habits — not the most expensive box on the shelf. Proper sizing and installation matter more to your real-world bill than chasing the highest SEER2 sticker.
