Salt-Air Corrosion: The Silent Killer of Coastal Mini Splits

Salt-Air Corrosion: The Silent Killer of Coastal Mini Splits

If you live within a few miles of the coast in South Florida, salt air is constantly working against your mini split's outdoor unit. It's one of the most overlooked causes of premature failure — and most general HVAC companies never warn homeowners about it.

What salt actually does

Microscopic salt particles settle on the outdoor condenser coil and fins. Combined with humidity, they accelerate corrosion of the aluminum and copper. As the coil corrodes, it can't release heat efficiently, the system works harder, bills climb, and eventually refrigerant leaks or compressor failure set in.

Warning signs to watch for

  • White, chalky or powdery buildup on the outdoor coil fins.
  • Rust streaks on the cabinet or mounting bracket.
  • Bent, flattened or flaking coil fins.
  • Rising energy bills with no change in usage.

How to protect your investment

  • Rinse the outdoor unit with fresh water periodically to wash off salt.
  • Keep landscaping and salt spray away from the condenser.
  • Have anti-corrosion coatings applied to vulnerable coils.
  • Schedule twice-yearly inspections to catch corrosion early.

Our Polar membership includes salt-air anti-corrosion treatment and coastal inspections — protection most South Florida shops still don't offer. A little prevention adds years to an expensive system.
