Mini Split Not Cooling? The 7 Most Common Causes

Mini Split Not Cooling? The 7 Most Common Causes

A mini split that's running but not cooling is one of the most common calls we get in summer. Here are the usual suspects, from quick DIY checks to issues that need a technician.

1. Dirty filters or blower wheel

Clogged filters choke airflow. Clean them first. If they're spotless but airflow is still weak, the blower wheel is likely caked with biofilm and needs a deep clean.

2. Wrong mode or settings

Sounds obvious, but check that the remote is set to 'Cool' (not 'Fan' or 'Dry') and the temperature is below room temp. A bumped setting is the cheapest fix there is.

3. Low refrigerant / a leak

If the unit blows mild air and you see ice on the lines, you may have a refrigerant leak. This needs a licensed tech — topping off without fixing the leak is a waste of money.

4. Frozen evaporator coil

Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can freeze the coil. Turn the system to 'Fan' to thaw it, then call us to find the root cause.

5. Dirty outdoor condenser

A salt-and-dust-caked outdoor coil can't dump heat. Cooling drops and bills rise. Gently rinse it, and have corrosion inspected.

6. Faulty capacitor or compressor

If the outdoor fan won't spin or the compressor won't start, you may have an electrical component failure. This is a repair, not a DIY.

7. Error codes

Blinking lights on the indoor head are error codes. Snap a photo and send it to us — they tell us exactly where to look and speed up the fix.
